SJRA

Our contributions to the South Jersey Radio Association club bulletin "Harmonics" includes lengthy Web addresses. As the URL's can be difficult or a nuisance to type into your Web browser, the postings here should make it easier to get to the Web sites SJRA members are interested in. Look for the posting at w2xq.com at the time "Harmonics" is scheduled for delivery in the south Jersey area. Questions, suggestions or contributions are always welcome.

Crusing the Web

While doing a bit of research on repeater interference, I found that Metrocor — metrocor.net — staff have significantly upgraded this Web site that covers New York City, Long Island and most of Westchester county. The listings seem to be updated, compared to what I remember seeing in the past. This fills in the coverage gaps to the north of our local coordinating group. That's a good thing, in my opinion, as the long-time repeaters-on-a-map Artsci — artscipub.com/repeaters — database now requires a paid subscription ($20/year) to do anything more than a by-town listing within a state. Virtually all the coordinating councils have their own Web site, and you can look up look repeaters by location, frequency and band. See mysite.verizon.net/trscons/bm_ar_fm.html for 12 councils on the east coast of the USA and Canada.

Olympics

I happened to be in a local Chinese restaurant and noted that the HDTV screen was playing video with the logo "CCTV-9" in one corner. I recognized the label for a Chinese outlet, inquired as to the source and was told the station was on the Internet. I found the source a few minutes later — english.cctv.com — and looked around the Web site. Unfortunately the streaming video doesn't play on my Mac in either the Safari or Foxpro browser, but it probably streams OK for those using Windows' Internet Explorer. It may worth checking out when the Olympics begin. You might be treated to alternative coverage without the incessant advertisements. The Web site has news items from around the country, photo gallaries, and travel information (including the capability to make hotel and restaurant reservations). The site has video and photographs of the Olympic preparations now underway.

Other video streams

Do you like auto racing? The Indianapolis 500 race had live video and audio streaming on the Web all day long, sans commercials. The NASCAR and Formula 1 races also stream audio and video on the Web, and that includes live race statistics and timing data. As this is a digression from the focus of the club's bulletin, send me an e-mail and I'll reply with a list of Web sites.

Quickies

If you use Google's Gmail, note that Google has added a "Labs" section to its browser-based e-mail service. You can read more about it on WebMonkey. Get the link from the live version of this column on w2xq.com as it is too long to manually type into your browser. "Labs" debuted on June 5, with an initial 13 new features. More cutting-edge enhancements will be added as the Google engineers develop them.

"WhatIsMyIPAddress" — whatismyaddress.com — is an information-filled Web site devoted to discussion of the " Internet Protocol (IP) address. IP addresses consist of four numbers separated by periods (also called a 'dotted-quad') and look something like 127.0.0.1." The many FAQs (frequently asked questions) include, but are not limited to, these often-asked questions: How do I change my IP address? How do I hide my IP address? Is my IP address blacklisted? Can someone find out who I am by my IP? Interesting and useful information, in my opinion, especially if you use chat or download-type programs.
